1. What information do you collect?
2. Is my information visible to other users?
3. What do you do with the collected information?
4. Who has access to the collected information?
5. What are 'cookies' and why do you use them?
6. How private are private messages?
7. How does this website protect the privacy of young users?

1. What information do you collect?
Just like almost every website in the world, we log the time, IP address and requested file of every request received by our server. In addition we collect some information from you when you register at this website, and some information from you each time you login, logout, or post a new message.

When you register with this website you are asked for your name and your email address. You may optionally supply the name of your Scout group and your country. You are not asked for any other information, and no other information about you is collected or stored.

We ask for your email address so that we have a verified method of identifying every registered user of the website, and so that we can contact a registered user if we need to. This avoids anonymous users and helps to maintain a safer environment on the website.

When a registered user uses our website each login and logout is recorded. In addition the IP address (a number that identifies a computer on the internet) of the user's computer is recorded each time a user posts a message to the website.

This site uses cookies to identify logged in users and to check their authorization each time a new page is requested. The cookies are not used to collect any information, other than whether a user is logged in or not. They are not used to track or analyse users' activities. Our website holds information about the cookies sent to a user only for as long as that user is logged in to the website.

2. Is my information visible to other users?
Only your name, the date you registered, and the number of messages you have posted are visible to other users. If you give a Scout group or country when you register then that information will also be visible to other users. Your email address is never visible to other users.

3. What do you do with the collected information?
The information about you is stored on our server. We do not use it for any purpose except in connection with the administration of this website. We will only use your email address to contact you for administration purposes. These may include: notification of your password, verification of your email address, notification of a change in the status of your account, notification of a major change in the ScoutsOnline.org website, or notification of inappropriate posting or inappropriate message content.

4. Who has access to the collected information?
Only the administrators of the ScoutsOnline.org website have access to your information. Your details will not be given to other organisations or used for any purpose other than in connection with this website.

ScoutsOnline.org reserves the right to reveal a user's details to legal authorities in the event of a serious complaint against the user and in response to a valid request from such authorities.

5. What are 'cookies' and why do you use them?
'Cookies' are small chunks of information which a web server may send to your computer when you request a page from the server. The cookie is stored on your computer and the contents of the cookie may be requested later by the same server. ScoutsOnline.org uses cookies to record whether a user is logged in or not. When you log in a cookie is sent to your computer recording that you are logged in, and containing an identifying number. Subsequently when you request any page on the ScoutsOnline.org website the server will ask your computer for the contents of the login cookie. If there is one with a valid identification number in it then the server knows that you are logged in, and it knows which user you are. Otherwise the server knows that you are not logged in.

Most browsers can be configured to always accept cookies, always refuse them, or to ask you for instructions if a cookie is received. If your browser is configured to always refuse cookies then you will not be able to log in to this website.

6. How private are private messages?
ScoutsOnline.org supports the sending of private messages between registered users. Private messages are not sent by email, and the recipient's email address is not used and is not revealed. Private messages are stored on this website until the recipient next logs in. They can not be seen by anyone except the recipient and the administrators of the website.

The administrators of ScoutsOnline.org will, from time to time, read the contents of private messages to ensure that they are appropriate for this forum. The contents of private messages will be kept confidential under the same conditions as other information gathered about you on this website. However, you should not include information in private messages which you do not wish the administrators of this website to see, or which you do not wish to be stored as part of your data on this website.

7. How does this website protect the privacy of young users?
The nature of this website means that a significant number of our users are young people, and we have taken particular care to provide a safe environment for them. The steps we have taken to do this include:
